BrotherReed:
I'm going to give them both a 6/10, but for different reasons. My mom has actually surprised me on occassion by recognizing some of the things that make films good. Her taste is more varied than Dad's. She'll branch out more readily than my dad will and sometimes surprises me. She likes good suspense movies and dramas, as well as good family comedies. She also likes Alfred Hitchcock and a number of classics. Her biggest weakness, besides an expected feminine tolerance for chick flicks and melodrama, is an inability to withstand extreme content. She has trouble with spiders or bugs, violence, and well, just about every other category. However, if she can catch a movie on TV where it's been edited for content, then she will often like a great movie. Dad and I share a love of monster films. He took me to see Jurassic Park when I was 7, and just for that he probably earns his 6 out of 10. We like Jurassic Park, King Kong, Godzilla, etc. and most sci-fi, but he will tend more readily to watch sub-part sci-fi channel type stuff. He can stomach violence, but often falls asleep during movies and so isn't so big on plots where you have to really pay attention. He's been guilty of generalizing movies with objectionable content without giving it a chance to see redeeming qualities. Both he and mom have been known to be sucked in by crappy sports dramas. So... I'd say my parents are somewhat above average as far as their tastes go, though certainly not exemplary. At least I can still watch a lot of my movies with them.
