My Problem of Fasting

First off, it is not real fasting, it's fasting from something I spend too much time with and more with than with God. I've been fasting from video games since the start of school this year, promising God I would do without them for an entire school year until the beginning of next summer. Twice I have played so far: Once by accident (cell phone) and the second I chose to play games when my friend tempted me really, really much. I promised God I'd do this because I love Him, but things are getting stupid because I am not playing games. I don't want to sound holy like the Pharisees in the Bible do, proclaiming that they are fasting, but I just need help on what to do. Should I cancel the fasting, probably disappointing God and my family but pleasing my friend who says it's stupid for doing it an entire year OR Should I continue as I promised to God, because Jesus even said to keep our promises to God, and to show I truly love the LORD but probably upsetting my friend, maybe losing him for (according to him) OVERDOING my faith to the point of annoying people and turning them away from God.

i think that's a great idea actually! most people wouldn't have the will power to do that (i for one, am too selfish to give up chocolate for lent =P) you have a number of different options... if you give up this "fast," to keep a friend, i don't think God will shun you... but think about you're priorities... if your friend is pulling you slowly from your strong relationship with Christ, i don't think you want to have that kind of friendship... but i don't think that the video games thing is a necessity in your relationship with God. Firstly, you could keep going with your video game fast and not play at all, and risk losing your friend in the name of jesus christ (which if you think about it could possibly cause christianity to become a turn off for your friend) or You could give up the complete fast, because if you think about it, everytime you decide not to play a video game, are you using that time to worship Christ? I'm guessing not... Instead, when you're with friends, go ahead and play video games and stuff, but then in your free time, instead of sitting down in front of the PS2 or w/e, do something to help your brothers and sisters in christ, go out into the community and do some service, or just spend some alone time with God. Let your friend know that you are still spending your free time doing this instead of video games, but that you are willing to play with him every once in awhile. That way he'll understand that God's not all about work and no play... you can use this as a witnessing tool (who ever said you can't witness to christians?) Maybe invite him along with you to do some community service or something... Don't just take my advice though, pray about it, and ask God for the wisdom to make the right decision, and for him to put the right words in your mouth as you work things out with your friend... best of luck! God Bless

Thanku, my friend. As I remember from one verse, fasting unless done for God is useless. If I am not worshipping God in this free time, it's stupid. If I spen that free time of mine with God, then it won't seem so useless! Well, I am still praying about it, but with the advice u guys are giving, I feel like I just need to focus and keep my promise with God, as I truly love Him since I started this in the first place!

good for u! hopefully ur friend will get some good out of this and reflect on ur devotion to God, and maybe compare it to his own faith journey... God is good! No matter what happens, he has your best interests in mind:)
