The Simms Tigers traveled yesterday to play the Heart Butte Warriors. It happened to be their senior night. The was quite a few seniors, and they all came out with their families and did the usual "senior night" thing. BUT after that was done, there was a ceremony where the kids wrote a paragraph or so about a person/ or people they would like to honor and why. These people would come out and the kids would place a beautiful Native blanket around their shoulders. Yes, it took a long time, and the boys varsity game didn't start until almost 9, but it really made me see those kids in a whole new light. In our culture where it's ALL ABOUT THE KIDS.... These kids had to take time and evaluate their lives up until this point. They recognized the fact that people had sacrificed for them... And they were able to see beyond themselves on "their" night to publicly bestow honor and love on the people that loved them. So I thank you, Heart Butte Warriors... You did my heart good last night!
