It's about whether you're a strong Christian or not. I'm not saying you aren't one, just correcting your argument ;) .

what might be ok with one person might not be ok for another. you should listen to your dad, and respect his authority, but there is no answer to whether or not secular music is wrong or right. it's a personal standard, left to be determined between you and god.

Listening to some music certainly has the potential to pull you away from Christ. The danger is that the effects aren't likely to be noticeable right away. Like screams said, you should respect your dad's authority. He's only trying to do what he believes is best for you. Obviously any music created by a non-Christian is not infected with a poison that will somehow blacken your heart with every note. Yet many people may be more sensitive to certain negative messages than they believe. It's always wise to listen critically and be careful what you allow.

most definitely. it might not be music that has a lot of swearing, or sings about satan, or anything drastic... but even just listening to really sad music can leave you feeling depressed over time, and it's very common for depression to pull you away from god.

Your question has deeper question. Is everything Christian? For example, if the owner of a gas station is a Christian, does that make it Christian gas? Using the term Christian to describe something, can't possibly make it good or bad. I mean if a band were just awful musicians, but they were Christians would the music be good or bad? Was Bach a Christian? Is his music good or bad. All things have to be judged by what Paul said, "some things are not edifying." In other words, they don't build us up. Bad Christian music is not going to make us good Christians, but good music from non-Christians is something to think about. Sure the music might be good, but does it tear you away from what you know to be right and true? There's the answer. Sometimes a non-Christian song, can mean the most spiritually. For example, U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday is one. The Eagle's Desperado is another one. Coldplay's The Hardest Part works too. Good luck in the debate. It will never end until we're before Christ in heaven. e_scott

My dad says that I can listen to some non-Christian artists, but he's got to approve of the bands/singers before I can listen to them. I am basically banned from secular rap/hip-hop becuase of all the impure/negative things the artists sing about. Anyways, to answer your question, if you are a strong believer, then I don't think it's wrong to listen to non-Christian music. I listen to quite a few non-Christian bands like Switchfoot, Creed, Godsmack, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, etc. and I don't feel myself being pulled away from Christ. If your a weak believer, then you might not want to listen to Christian music, becuase you might not know if it's acceptable or not and you can easily get dragged in the other direction in your walk with Christ. So basically, it's not bad to listen to non-Christian stuff, you just have to watch out for lyric content. It's the depressing songs that lead you away from Christ. If the songs sing about sex, drugs, alcohol, satanic things, etc., then stay away from them. If they just sing about harmless things like an ex or something like that, then it's fine to listen too as long as they don't use foul language. You should always listen to your dad though. Do what he says and you can listen to non-Christian music when your older hopefully. Hope I helped!

DHfan wrote:
just so you know, horsechic, Switchfoot is a Christian band
They are? I could have sworn I heard that they were Christian themselves but they didn't want to be known as a Christian band 'cause then non-Christians wouldn't listen to their music. Guess I was mistaken.
